Boxing Fundamentals: Stance, Guard & Footwork

Every combination, every slip, every counter-punch starts with three fundamentals: stance, guard, and footwork. Coaches spend the first weeks of training on these basics because everything else in boxing is built on top of them.

Stance. A balanced stance keeps you ready to punch, defend, and move in any direction. Feet shoulder-width apart, knees soft, weight balanced — not leaning forward or back.

Guard. Hands up, chin down, elbows in to protect the ribs. A tight guard is the difference between slipping a punch and eating one.

Footwork. Boxing is often won with the feet before the hands. Small, controlled steps let you control distance, cut angles, and stay balanced enough to punch with power.

We drill these fundamentals with every boxer, from first-timers to our competitive team, because even advanced fighters return to the basics when something in their game breaks down.
