Nutrition Tips For Young Athletes

Training hard three nights a week means young boxers need fuel that supports recovery, growth, and focus — not just energy for the next drill.

Encourage a balanced plate before training: complex carbohydrates like rice or whole grain bread, a lean protein source, and vegetables. Avoid heavy, greasy meals right before class since they can cause sluggishness on the bag and in sparring.

Hydration matters as much as food. We recommend water throughout the day, not just during the session, especially for evening classes after a full day at school.

After training, a snack with protein and carbohydrates within an hour helps muscles recover for the next session. Simple options like a turkey sandwich, yogurt with fruit, or a glass of milk with a piece of toast work well for growing athletes.

We are not nutritionists, and every young athlete is different — for specific dietary needs, especially for competitive boxers making a weight class, we encourage families to talk with a pediatrician or sports dietitian.
